Police are looking for an orange-handled machete with a black curved blade they believe was used in the Oct. 16 murder of Aaron Staszko and left on or near a dirt path in the river valley near 20 Street and 137 Avenue. Investigators believe a passerby may have inadvertently picked it up.

On that day around 11:30 a.m., police said they responded to a disturbance at a home near 34 Street and 138 Avenue and found a “severely injured” man in critical condition. Paramedics took him to hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy confirmed Staszko, 32, died of “injuries caused by an edged weapon” in a homicide, police said on Oct. 19.

Police arrested Michael Ferreira, 33, who was wanted on a warrant for second-degree murder in Staszko’s death.

Ferreira also faces charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats to a 35-year-old woman during the disturbance.

All three people knew each other, police said.

If you have information about the weapon, contact police at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
