The incident occurred after the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by oil magnate Ernest Obiejesi, announced it would distribute rice to the less fortunate for Christmas 2024.

Most of the victims were women, and disturbing videos on social media showed lifeless bodies on the ground.

Witnesses reported that many of the injured were transported to Our Lady’s Hospital in Okija, although hospital representatives could not be reached for comment.

A local resident told The Gazette that thousands of 10-kilogram bags of rice were distributed, but the overwhelming crowd resulted in some people receiving only small amounts, as demand far exceeded supply.

Obiejesi’s foundation, which organizes the event annually, also runs children’s hospitals and schools in Okija, located about 100 kilometers south of Awka, the state capital.

The Anambra police have launched an investigation into the incident, though no further details have been shared.

Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary to the Anambra governor, confirmed the incident and assured that the state government is closely monitoring the situation.

This devastating event follows a similar tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo state, where over 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives in a stampede during a carnival.
